NO Sound from x31...sometimes...

#1 Post by gujjuman » Tue Mar 04, 2008 5:05 pm

Hi there. I've been dealing with this issue for several months now and am at my wits end. I have an x31 that I purchased new several years ago. All was well until about 8 mos ago when the sound went out, but it gets weirder...

--> The headphone jack does not work. The sound does not work when it is out of the MediaSlice.

--> When it's in the MediaSlice, and if positioned just right, the sound works through the media slice speakers. (<-- has anyone else had this contact issue?)

I have tried to replace the speaker inside the X31 and also re-installed windows. Even the boot up BEEP doesn't work, but all is fine if it's sitting on the media slice.

I don't know what else I can replace as I thought the sound was built in to the MB.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for the help.

Looks like some cold connection, hopefully just the connectors... so if guarantee return is not posible, i would try opening and resoldering the connector. If you are not skilled with hands, bluetooth speakers could be an option..? Expensive but tolerable these days...

PS. what is a mediaslice? ... dock?

Yeah the MediaSlice is a dock for the X31 it has the optical drive, extra battery, additional speakers, etc.

It just doesn't make sense why nothing works when the computer is not docked. What connection do you think is cold between the MB and the headphone jack/speaker?

Unfortunately the X31 does not have bluetooth built-in...so I'd have to buy a bluetooth card for the card slot? or is there a way to integrate it into the laptop?

thanks again for all the help everyone!

Cold connection can be anywhere. But the connector should be the easiest to resolder (provided that you can access it).

Both Cardbus and internal miniPCI slot should be an option. I don't know, whether there is an internal miniPCI free in your rig, the cardbus should work ok.

This may sound silly but make sure you are turning on sound both with the physical button, and with the sound software. I have found that if I mute with the button, I cannot turn sound back on via software. If I forget that I used the button, I think my sound doesn't work. Just worth checking all possibilities.

THanks so much for the help. I have tried the physical button and the settings in Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel...it says

SOundMAX digital audio...it's not muted, speaker volume is up. I also tested the microphone from the SoundMAX settings and it appears to be working...

this does make me think it's a software or driver issue, but I have even re-installed windows and that hasn't helped...maybe something in the bios??

thoughts?

Have you downloaded the driver from Lenovo and re-installed? I would try that.

yep...when I re-installed windows, no drivers were installed, i went to Lenovo to download the most recent drivers, etc...

could it be an IRQ or some other issue in the BIOS that wouldn't be fixed with a windows reinstall/new speaker hardware...

You admitted that it works when properly placed with some speakers.. looks quite driver independent issue, i believe it is really physical HW problem.

When I was cleaning my X41t palmrest bezel, i noticed the black microphone wire is torn away (i was very careful about it, still it broke somehow), so I'll be resoldering myself or ill let a technician do it..I hope the warranty won't be affected...

edit: fixed by techie, now I hope it works and that it is not short circuited...

Still not working. Anyone have other suggestions? I guess i'll just have to buy a new x300

I know it's not a sexy question, but surely someone knows the cause?

my microphone works... But the torn cable is a tad shorter, so it is quite stretched. I hope the wire will adapt and the soldering wil hold.

I think noone will "know", but I really recommend to look in the HW direction. I paid equivalent $6 for 5 minutes repair.. the technician told me to set the price :)...
