I just bought a 2.0Ghz X32. I put 2GB RAM and a 250GB WD Scorpio drive in it. I've owned a few Thinkpad ultraportables (except for the latest X200's) and this model is my favorite. Small, fast, easily upgradeable, solid keyboard, battery lasts a long time, takes older UB2000 drives in the X3 ultrabase...cheap. Shares many parts with X31's, so they are readily available.

I must admit I agree with all the pleasant words on X31. Mine is still my daily workspace (> 12hours/day - every day) as it has been for almost 5 years now and compared to both X61 and X300 it is still outstanding (the latter being slightly to big and without firewire - I wonder what they have been thinking - I must admit that I may be choosing HP2510p as my next workspace, but there is more options and I am in no hurry).

I have of course upgraded to 2GB ram (and don't cache anything to HD) and have 250GB HD. I am using http://www.westerndigital.com/en/produc ... 6#jump1515 very silent, but I think it consumes a little more power than the Hitachis.

Well, now we're getting into legendary, vs close to legendary territory :). Both keyboards have a similar feel to me. The major complaint with the X3X keyboards that I have seen over the years is the addition of the back/forward keys. Complains surround from those being useless to just getting in the way. Personally I use them and like them for their added functionality. But then again I do an inordinate amount of web browsing and not a lot of office work on mine.

WarMachine: the X31s are easier to find, too. I realize now that I was lucky to find an X32 for a good price.

I don't need to use TPFancontrol on the X32 -- it's already very quiet. I use TPFC on my T40, though. The T40 fan is loud.

I am not using the T41 because it has the infamous video problem. I will need to invest some money to repair it. I am thinking of upgrading the CPU in the T40 to a late-model Dothan.

If I had to choose I'd say 600's were the best.

I really like the feel of the 380z keyboard. How does it compare to the 600 (which I never used)?

I Bought two X31's about 18 months ago for $500 total.

One was in mint condition, the other was heavily used.
I got a couple of spare keyboards, 6 batteries and a very nice Samsonite Laptop bag.

But then i got an X40 and ended up giving the X31's to my mother and brother.

Brother is an absolute hooligan, but the machine has withstood being thrown (literally) and being run constantly on a bed (heat build up must be unbelievable).

The X31's are are indeed fine machines, maybe the best built too.
Although my old X24 is still running great (gave that one to my sister).

I am considering swapping my X40 back with my mum for the X31, but only if i can find a 7200 rpm IDE drive to get it running like stink - i am fed up with the silly 1.8" drive in the X40 and the bottleneck to performance it has become.

Does anyone know if 7200rpm IDE drives are still available, i cant seem to find one anywhere!

thanks

7200rpm IDE drives are extremely rare nowadays because all HDD manufacturers has stopped producing 7200rpm IDE drives since 2007. CMIIW. And it is now the end of IDE era, so you better get IDE drives as soon as possible before it is too late.
