Making a Mirror Copy w/ Ghost 14

Okay, I went online with Norton tech support and they setup Ghost 14 to make a disk copy of my ThinkPad X30 HDD. The new drive was mounted in a USB case. After copy, I mounted the new drive in my laptop and it would not boot. Back in the USB case, the disk manager showed the HDD did not contain the hidden data and had no drive letter.

I contacted tech support again and was told I would need to make a disk backup and then boot from the Ghost CD and restore the data to the new drive. But the laptop has no CD. How am I going to get this thing copied?

The laptop computer is networked and I can mount the new drive to the IDE, with an adapter, to my desktop. I load all my software using the CD on the desktop computer.

I need the right way to do this.

I've copied hard drives from Thinkpads several times with Acronis True Image. Never had a problem. If you don't have any luck with Ghost, give it a try. There's a 15 day trial version on thier web site.

Ghost 14 has not worked. I will try Acronis True Image. Thanks for the advise kevinc.

Let me know how it turns out... (I like Acronis, in fact, I have a new copy of Ghost 14 on ebay...)

Ended up using Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0. Worked like a charm. Set it up in Windows to make an exact copy of the 40gig on the new 80gig. There are other options. Put the new drive in a USB case and on completion, put the 80 in place of the 40 in the X30 and it booted right up. It did the whole thing in DOS and took about seven hours across the USB 1 that is in this old ThinkPad. Gave the remaining 40gig a new drive letter and the deed was done.

Glad it worked out... I think that there are some switches that you need to use with Ghost that will do the job with thinkpads, but Acronis just works for me ...

Try sysresccd.org for a free linux based partitioning tool. just copy your partitions, resize them while you're at it, and don't remember to set the boot flag for your boot partition.
