X31 installed used system board - beeps and blank screen

#1 Post by Ziborium » Thu Apr 03, 2008 7:16 pm

Hi there!

The system board of my X31 was broken so I bought a used one at ebay. Having installed that one after pressing the start button the only thing my machine does is running the fan, giving four cycles of four short beeps and a blank screen.

The manual says: system board (IBM security chip).

I have been searching the web for three hours without any result. Does anyone know help?

Best,

Ziborium

I know on A31 boards you have to take the security chip off of the old board and transfer it to the new board. Not sure on X31's, but it's worth looking in to. Remove power/battery first.

The security chip either isn't there or it's mismatched. The X31 security chip resides on the IR/IEEE 1394 sub card assembly (see http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... R-44049#16). The sub card has to match with the system board or you will get the 4 beeps. I found out the hard way .. maybe you have as well.

Did the motherboard come with the sub card? If not, ask the seller where it is. Sometimes, people sell the boards without understanding that this is a critical piece. If they can't provide it, they owe you a return. I was lucky - the seller hadn't gotten rid of it and sent it to me later.

I do have some X31 motherboards - 1.3GHz and 1.4GHz. What CPU speed motherboard did they sell you?

the X31 sub card is dedicated,
as far as i experienced;) a mismatching one causes
"error 192 system security hardware tampered"

don't know what happens if its totally missing,
but even if you see the fire wire connector i'd suggest you to check out whether the subcard is properly connected

I did the mobo changeout and found the same IR/1394 sub-module pairing issue ... thanks a ton! In reality, I completely forgot to install it, got the 4 beeps, then upon examination, found that there's a sticker on the sub-module and a sticker on chips in the area that shows the pairing (sorta). In my case, the stickers said "1830" and "2520" on the sub-modules, while the stickers on the chips in the area said "1820" and "2550", so figuring that the "18"s belonged together, I installed that way and worked perfectly.
