I think the software issue is a messy one. MS has a deal with Dell to provide Windows at a discount for bulk purchases. Both parties benefit. Most OEMs will produce tailored CDs containing additional gui and drivers for the hardware it is sold with. It should work for any pc but it may have built-in security measures - try it and see.

Not sure about the legal issues, but I know that when I had to rebuild a workstation at my office, I grabbed a Dell cd from the library versus the correct cd for that system. When the BIOS completed the cd spun up and then informed me that I was to install this copy of windows onto Dell hardware only and then quit. Seems it reads BIOS info prior to install.....

Did you have the CD-Rom in the slice or did you load OS from an external USB attached CD-Rom?

I used a docking station with a dvd rom installed in bay when booting up I opted to boot from rom instead of hard drive and it was plain sailing from there
