X41: Replacement for trackpoint mouse click

#1 Post by nomadees » Sat Apr 26, 2008 4:09 pm

hi all,
i was wondering if some of you know who sell the replacement for trackpoint mouse click button (red right-left plastic under the keyboard) without buying the full keyboard.

i'm browsing through ebay and still can't find it.

or if some of you have a spare one from your old keyboard. maybe you can sell it to me.

thanks all.

Same here, but on X20: left red button works but doesn't click anymore. Quite annoying :)

If you pop-up the button and take a look at the rubber cone underneath the button, you will probably find the rubber cone got broken.
All you need to do is to find a rubber cone replacement from online and replace it.
For x40/x41:
http://tinyurl.com/5mc9yv (ebay link)
Or ask the seller (ex. http://tinyurl.com/6evkct or http://tinyurl.com/5slnhz ebay link)if they have the same type of rubber cone that fits your machine.

If the rubber cones underneath the keys are the same as the one underneath the buttons, you can even swap the broken one with the one under the key that's rarely used(ex. Ctrl key on the right side).

When you say "pop up the button", do you have to remove the keyboard first to do that? I was trying to pry up the mouse buttons on my X40, but it was giving me some resistance and I didn't want to break anything.

My mouse buttons work, but I have to press really hard to engage them and the plastic makes a squeaking noise. My scroll button works just fine, however.

I didn't remove the keyboard when I remove/installed the keys/buttons. I used a mini flat-head screw driver and pry the button up from the bottom edge. The resistance you had is probably from the hinges clipping-on to the inside of the button cap. I've done it for 7 or 8 times before and I haven't broken anything yet. Just be careful not to let the tip of the driver damage the hinges or the electronic board underneath the keys/buttons (you have to insert the driver deep enough to do that damage so it shouldn't be a issue)

The keys/buttons failure happens fairly common on laptops when they get old. The rubber cones can only take so many clicks before they break. Sometimes the frequent/sudden temperature changes can cause it to fail too.

teetee, do I understand correctly that you're talking about keyboard buttons not mouse buttons?
I've replaced keyboard buttons many times before but it's the mouse left button that's not "clicking" and I don't know if it's repairable.

I call the keys on the keyboard "keys" and the mouse buttons "buttons" in all my posts. The hinges underneath the keys are two-piece design while the "hinges" underneath the buttons are merely mini hooks that clip onto the inside of the button cap.

It's hard to explain it further. Much easier to just take a second and pop them up to see for yourself.
