other laptops i considered were:
Apple 12" Powerbook (already have a 15" so ruled it out)
Sony Z505 (keyboard was AWFUL)
i am very pleased with my X40 and the keyboard is fantastic. i've even grown to love the trackpoint (never thought i would say this!) and now, using touchpads is awkwardly difficult

but the thinkpad. it will dwarf the other companies in quality. Ive had a fujitsu, thoshiba, 2 thinkpads and a powerbook, and i must say the thinkpad is all i would ever own.
I droped my t22 and took a chunk out of the top corner and it still worked perfect.
yes some of the screens are a little more desirable than the ibm, but mine have never let me down,
sony is crap

None other. Last laptop was a Dell Inspiron 8100. Never again a Dell. Construction build quality is quite lacking. Not that the R and G series Thinkpads are striking either. Having heard constant praises for the T series laptop I found out for myself by seeing one in person. I'm not one to go "jump on the bandwagon" because everybody on the internet said so. I had to see it for myself, and afterwards I was sold. I knew then and there it wasn't simply just hype.
But I'm more impressed with the X31 than the T42 as it's even more solidly built.
