X30: which kind of memory will work?

#1 Post by mange_ » Sat May 10, 2008 7:53 am

I did a search for this topic but couldn't find any exhaustive answers so why not make sure it is clearly covered once and for all here.

1. Will the X30 take high density ram or only low density?

2. Will any ram from any manufacturer work as long as it is PC133 high and/or low density? (If not, please list what modules you know to work!)

3. Do I have to have the same amount of ram in each of the two slots? For example 2x128mb, 2x256mb etc. Is it possible to only use one of the slots for one single module?

4. Is there any operating system that require two modules or two modules with the same size?

I'm pretty sure about 3-4 but not about 1-2 so please help me out! :)

Cheers,
Mange

X30 will take any PC133 RAM, density doesn't matter. Manufacturer doesn't matter either.

You can combine slots any way you want...128+256 or 512+64 or...you get the idea.

If you're intent on running XP, 512Mb is the bare minimum IMHO, 1Gb is recommended.

Hope this helps.

Thanks ajkula66, you wouldn't happen to know what ram works in the X20-X24?

X20 and X21 will take PC100 RAM, only one slot is open for a maximum of 320 or 384Mb depending on the model.

X22/23/24 take PC133 RAM, one slot open for a maximum of 640Mb.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, what about low/high density for the X20-24?

High/low density matters when you're trying to install PC133 in a machine originally running PC100.

So, if your specs originally require PC133 (X22/23/24/30) you can use ANY PC133.

If your specs call for PC100, you can use low-density PC133. Honestly, you're better off just sticking with PC100 for X20 and X21.
