x40 sound issue

I have no sound on my x40. I downloaded the latest driver from lenovo site, but it won't install. The soundmax program appears to run but then says "can't find the driver" and asks me to reboot. No device showing in device mgr except for "audio codecs" Any suggestions? I have tried to manually install pointing to the driver location to no effect.

Have you tried Thinkvantage System Update or even WinXP update site? Sometimes that fixes it. Good luck

Updated everything. Service Pack 3, the KB888111 update, Thinkvantage, everything. Still no luck. Even puppy linux doesn't see a sound device. any other ideas? Tx.

under linux, log in as root, open a terminal, run the following command:
# for name in lspci lsusb lshal; do $name > hwinfo$name.txt; done

You should be able to find three .txt files in the directory where you ran the command: hwinfolspci.txt, hwinfolsusb.txt, and hwinfolshal.txt. Copy and paste the content of the files here and maybe someone can find a clue to the problem.

or simply filter out the string by
# for name in lspci lsusb lshal; do $name | egrep -i audio; done
and see what's shown on the screen
