Is there a fix for this? I am thinking of getting an X40, but I have heard the stories....
Thanks!

The only fix is LCD replacement.
These spots are pressure marks that form as a result of LCD being exposed to physical strain. Given that X4x series have probably the thinnest lid of all the ThinkPads I've ever owned, they appear to be more prone to this defect than the rest of them.
Hope this helps.

There is no cure once the spots are there, but there is prevention if you are lucky enough to acquire a machine that presently has none.
Carrying it in a sleeve, separated from anything else, would be a good start. Minimizing opening/closing of the lid without a keyboard protector of some kind...and, of course, never putting anything on the lid when it's closed.
I'm sure that others will chime in with their opinions, but this would be a decent start.

I share an X40 with lots of pressure spots with my SO, who used it for years without any sleeve or other protection (she just dumped it in the backpack) and has since upgraded to another laptop. I also have another slightly faster X40 that's still in pristine condition and never left the house (I got some time ago because I like the X40 design so much).
We still use the old X40 daily, and treat it pretty roughly, because it already looks so worn. (But it's still working as a champ.) It's actually quite liberating to be able to use it so carelessly.

If I had it to do over, and I had a used X40 in front of me I was thinking of buying, I'd put up some kind of uniform bright background and make a subjective judgment. For instance, Winword full-screen with a new document would work, apart from its narrow borders.
And then I would resolve never to use the machine as a drinks tray or anything like that.
