X40 problems...

#1 Post by generalachoo » Sat Jun 28, 2008 7:51 pm

Hi guys,

I just got an X40 with a slew of problems.

1) The backlight or the inverter is dead. Picture works on external monitor. How can we tell which one it is?

2) Cannot get into Bios! The laptop boots into the familiar IBM splash screen and then goes straight to "Intel boot agent" where it returns a media link error (probably because there is no ethernet connectivity)

3) trackpoint button (mouse buttons) doesnt work. The keyboard is in good condition though and has been tested on a different x40.

Thanks!

Well, your motherboard may be defective as well. The fact that it displays on external monitor means next to nothing. LCD output is digital while the VGA one is analog, and one can work without the other. This would be my bet, given the machine type.

Use a flashlight to determine whether anything is displayed when you turn the unit on.

Do you see the any message under the splash screen? You should press F1 and it should take you right into BIOS.

Once there, check if Trackpoint is enabled.

Good luck, seems like you'll need it.
