Hello,

Just thought I would let you guys know that as of this morning I am the owner of a sparkling new X31 (2885PWU).

To be honest, I have never gotten my hands on any Thinkpad before. I had seen pictures of them, and I had seen other people using them, but that's as far as I had got. Let me tell you...what a beauty! This laptop just oozes class all over. Build quality? Like a tank! I am very pleasantly surprised about the quality of the keyboard as well, after having heard about declining IBM keyboard quality over the last few years.
The screen is perfect (no bad pixels that I can tell, although the only test I did was look at it closely under a red, blue, and green background).

Wireless seems to work just fine. To my surprise, the laptop detected 5 wireless networks in my area, 2 secure and 3 without security (WTF does that mean, by the way?). I have disabled the wireless hardware under the device manager, since I don't plan on using it and I figured that it might consume some battery.

I don't know about the X40, but this X31 is a keeper, and I don't regret a single bit that I made the decision to get this for my primary machine.
I was doubtful about build quality and screen size, but like I said before the laptop is just build like an armored vehicle, and the screen is surprisingly readable at just 12.1 inches and 1024x768 resolution.

Finally I would like to thank everyone in the forum for all the knowledge I have been able to acquire over the past 2 weeks. You are great, guys!

Gotta go now. Guess what I'm going to do next? Drool :P

It means that, until they discover it, you can have acces to free internet. :)

Keep in mind, they may be uber-geeks and purposely keep encryption turned off in the hope that someone like you will use it, only to find out that they have been using packet sniffing software to figure out passwords, etc.

When I travel, I regularly find unsecure wireless networks, but I'm not a [censored] about it. I quickly log in, download my email in POP format, then log out. So, unless someone sends me a huge attachment, which is rare, I'm hardly using bandwidth. I know, it's still wrong, but it's one way I justify it to myself!

Enjoy that new machine :)
