Are These Standard Warranty Seals?

#1 Post by kunfuchopsticks » Thu Jul 10, 2008 5:56 pm

I bought a used X41 with warranty until end of the year. It's got a bunch individually bar-coded and numbered warranty seals. They are everywhere: on my user-accessible Ram module door, on the keyboard screws, even on the battery- just right on the batter-not over screw or anything. Someone had fun applying these!

Are these standard? I didn't think so, since they are placed over user-accessible doors and keyboard holes.

I called to have keyboard fixed, and they decided to send me a new one. I asked about the seals, and the guy seemed not so sure. I suggested I just peel them off and put them back, he said it's fine to do so because I'm only accessing user-accessible places- keyboard.

Well, I tried to remove one nicely, but these things are actually tamper-proof!, the thin film under it shatters when peeled.

Picture: sorry, was in a hurry, used cell.

So are these things standard. I mean, If I send my notebook with all of the removed, are they even going to notice it's suppose to be there?

Note from Admin: And apparently in too much of a hurry to follow the rules about pic warnings in the subject line.

My X41 tablet did NOT have any stickers like that at all. They look like they were attached by a VAR or some other type of reseller at some point.

The unit was labeled "refurbished." Whether refurbished by IBM or other reseller, I don't know.

So i guess my question would be do IBM/lenovo put these stickers on when refurbishing units?

I recently got a refurbished Thinkpad from the Lenovo outlet. It has one rather big gray sticker at the bottom that says it was refurbished by Lenovo (but that sticker doesn't cover anything important). It does not have any of the stickers that you mentioned.

I've never seen them come on a refurb, but that doesn't mean they haven't changed their procedures. What did they say when you called them?

I told the rep that in order for me replace the keyboard I need to have access to screws which are covered by seals. He sounded surprised that there would be seals on keyboard screws. He told me, it's ok to remove the seals, then re-place them back on.

On a current brand new think pad what/where is the warranty seal?

By looks of it, these seals were put on my novice people, just slapping them on- from the sole fact that there is a seal in the center of the battery- just right on the case of the battery, not over a screw, or a crack or anything. Funny, I find it.

How do they know if warranty is voided by consumer opening the unit?

Opening the unit doesn't void the warranty from Lenovo.

Go watch the movies and read the HMMs to see how many CRU (Customer Replaceable Units) there are.

Then I'm definitely ripping off all those warranty seals! Must have been put there by 3rd party reseller or something.

you are sure about this?

Is your warranty with Lenovo or with a third-party vendor?

If it's with Lenovo, I'm reasonably sure since I've neither heard nor experienced anything to the contrary.

What did the support line tell you when you called them and asked?

yeah it's with Lenovo.

He was surprised there would be seals there. He said it's ok to remove them to access keyboard screws.

I find it odd in this day and age Lenovo can afford to have no seals of some sort. I just read an article on how Apple programs Accelerometers in notebooks to check for voiding the warranty(On older macbooks).

<rolling eyes>

One of the things that has made so many of us devoted to the ThinkPad is that not only are we not prohibited from working on them ourselves but that first IBM and now Lenovo enable us to do so via the HMMs and the videos. Things are even better these days now that we don't have to play hide-and-seek with tools like the *books, the HMMs and the drivers. They've stopped moving them around every month so all our links work. Well, they work most of the time. ;-)

Of course, as with all things, YMMV.

Amazing. I didn't even know that VERY important fact before buying a Thinkpad. I'm a very hands on guy but everything these days comes with all sorts of anti-DYI measures like seals, weird screws, no screws...

Very surprised about this, very good news.

Just make sure you recognize the difference between a CRU and an FRU.
