Changing Battery Charge Thresholds in IBM X32

Here's some more information - which confuses the picture even more
I removed the Battery Maximiser utility and installed the Thinkpad Power Manager software on my T42P. Surprisingly it works so the firmware must be compatible, even though it is not listed on the download page.
The Power Manager let me adjust the charging thresholds on my battery (genuine IBM FRU 92P1087). I then swapped batteries, to a generic non OEM one manufactured by BND, and the charging threshholds still work.
So, at least for the T42P, the functionality does not seem to be tied to battery as it is unlikely that BND would have access to any Thinkpad specific battery firmware.
