x20 boots to bios

#1 Post by ajgiampa » Thu Jul 24, 2008 12:42 pm

Everytime I turn on my x20 laptop, it boots to the bios and I have to re-enter the date/time in the bios. After I enter this info and save the settings, it boots fine to windows. But after I turn it off and turn it back on, I have to re-enter the date information.

Any ideas what is wrong??

Thanks...

Probably you have a dead bios battery, try replace a new battery.

I replaced the CMOS battery and get the same result. It boots saying that there is a date/time error and when I press a key it takes me into the BIOS. It reboots just fine, only does this after I physically turn it off??

Keep your X2* plugged to AC for several days to get the CMOS battery charged.

I agree with cofreth, the symptoms point to the battery very strongly. If I were you I'd check whether the new battery is ok giving good voltage and ensure there is good contact...

The CMOS battery is a standard lithium button cell that is not rechargeable. If you don't already have a voltmeter, then take the battery down to an electronics store (Radio Shack is a good place to start; some hardware stores might be able to check it for you) and see if it reads at least 3.0V AND it has the proper polarity (red is +, black is -). Also, make sure that the replacement battery connector is exactly the same as the original. There's at least two different types of backup batteries (CR2032 and CR2025) and they have slightly different connectors. If the battery checks out but you are still getting the date/time prompt, then there might be a problem on the motherboard.

To:rkawakami
I was under the impression that there is no difference in the CRXX25 and the CRXX32 EXCEPT the mAh. They are both coin batteries aren't they? They are the standard coin battery designations and I don't believe those numbers refer to the connector that fits in the MB.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

If you are talking about off-the-shelf button cells, then yes, the only difference is in the mAh capacity and thickness of the battery (the "25" and "32" refer to the thickness; 2.5mm and 3.2mm respectively). However, when the backup battery is bought with the connector already attached, then those connectors will be different in both size and "normal" polarity. The connector on the CR2025 is smaller than the one on the CR2032. Also, when viewed with the exposed terminals in sight and the leads heading downward, the polarity is switched between the two connectors (CR2025 has the + on the right while the CR2032 has + on the left). As the X2 systems use the CR2025 (and thus the smaller connector), it should not be possible to accidentally stick in a CR2032. And as these connectors are both "keyed", it should not normally be possible from them to be plugged in the wrong way. Still, it would be wise to measure both the voltage and polarity and make sure you have the correct connector. Here's a scan of both batteries:

I did find with my X20 when I had it, that the actual connector that connected the battery to the motherboard had a broken solder joint which caused my failing CMOS battery symptoms despite the new battery - so I soldered it back on, and it was all fine.

My tired old eyes can detect no difference in the thickness of the CR2025 and the CR2032. There is, however, a listed difference in the mAh. The CR2025 is listed as 155 mAh and the CR2032 as 220 mAh.
