System Update anomaly

#1 Post by RRHODY » Thu Aug 07, 2008 10:05 am

Windows Update finds the three (3) hardware updates listed below for my X24 type 2660-MQU, but SYSTEM UPDATE doesn’t find any hardware updates; the report comes out “your system is up to date.” Device Manager finds drivers being used for the Network connection, and for the PS/2 TrackPoint, dated 2002. My display is set to 1024X768 and seems to be working just fine.

How come Windows finds newer drivers than provided by System Update?

We’ve been previously advised not to use Windows hardware updates – to only use those from IBM/Lenovo.

If things are working – NOT BROKEN – then should I ignore the Windows hardware updates and the inconsistency?

Intel – Network – Intel® PRO/100 VE
Network connection
December 2007

Lenovo – Input – PS/2 TrackPoint
February 2008

Lenovo – Other Hardware – ThinkPad
Display 1024X768
November 2006

windows update has found extra 'stuff' for just about every thinkpad i've owned. right now it's finding 6 for my t43. that said, i've never let it upgrade hardware drivers, preferring to leave that to ibm/lenovo. so far, i've never been sorry following that strategy.

i have help friends reverse a bad windows hardware driver update, though.

That's probably good advice, but it is strange that IBM/Lenovo lets such out dated drivers still control.

from the tawbook, your x24 is the same '02 vintage as my a31p. i bet for our situation, it's more... "if the model is getting older, and no one is reporting problems, let's just leave well enough alone and focus testing/certification on the newer models." probably a realistic business process model.

on the other end of the spectrum, the component manufacturers, ati, intel, etc, likely tweak hardware drivers longer, and that's how windows updates is able to present them to us. our dilemma is whether to use drivers that haven't been passed through some level of ibm/lenovo model-specific qc process.

but what do i know...

cheers!

Good rational explanation. I guess it really is, "if it ain't . . . "
