Cloning HD problem X40

#1 Post by tim S » Tue Aug 12, 2008 3:23 pm

Some questions for those who know!

My preferred backup method is to have (2) cloned hard drives,
use one at a time, and swap them as needed.
This method works well for my desktop and T42 but not my X40, because there is nowhere to install a second 1.8” drive.
So I have the 4200rpm 40gig in the laptop and a second 40 gig 7200rpm in the base.
I can clone from laptop to base but not the other way around.
If I remove the laptop hard drive, I can boot from the base hard drive but, even though it has the X40 IBM restore partition, I can’t restore it using the “Access IBM’ button.
The USB approach doesn’t work in this case either.

Here are my questions.

1. Am I missing something?
2. Is the cloning software, Casper XP, not good in this case.
3. Will a 1.8" drive work in the base adapter?
4. Can I do a master slave scenario through my desktop,
or will the voltage be too high for the 1.8” drive?

Thanks in advance

I found one answer. Norton Ghost 14, a bloated piece of software if ever there was one, recognizes both hard drives and, although I haven't pulled the trigger to actually start cloning, it seems to allow copying D:\ to C:\

This Apricorn universal hard drive adapter with its associated software works well for me, to clone from the internal drive to a second drive connected by USB. You can install the software or just boot from the CD-ROM.

I can't say for sure if there are any issues with the restore partition, since I don't have one.
