price check on X32

#1 Post by postdiction » Mon Sep 22, 2008 5:42 pm

hi,
I was looking into buying a X32. I would like a higher end x32.
My only real requirements are:

average cosmetic conditions and good lcd
1.8ghz or 2.0 ghz cpu
at least 512mb of ram

all other things i can supply

What would be a decent price for a machine like this?

Also, just checking ebay, it seems like x32s go for more than x40s why is that?

Thanks,

postdiction

Be careful with some of those low-price X40 systems. A couple of them that I just checked did not come with the hard drive. The 1.8" drive that those systems require can run you $100 or more.

Noticed the same thing ... X3x sell for more than X4x (in many cases). Why? I believe for the some of same reasons I'll be selling my X40 ($350, very clean, 60GB HDD, excellent LCD, good battery).

backward compatibility
My sig shows I run Win98 (no jokes please  ). Much to my dismay the X40 will not run 98 well because of display driver incompatibility. Worked with it forever, looking for and trying different drivers etc, no luck! X31 has Win98 support according to IBM web site.

bigger HDD potential
The X31 I just bought has a standard 2.5" PATA interface and room in the chassis for a conventional 2.5" HDD ... which means a WD 250GB HDD can be installed :D

Why else, not sure, but they do command a high price!

I'd say around the low to mid $400's. The problem is going to be finding one that is not loaded with RAM, hard drive, X3 ultrabase, CDRW, etc. Try sending a PM to BobA on this forum to see what he has.

Because despite the confusing naming scheme, an X32 is superior to an X40/X41 in terms of performance, thanks to a standard (not low-voltage) CPU and 5400RPM drive (compared to 4200RPM in the X4x).

For $500 on ebay (OBO auction), I just recently got a 2GHz, 512 megs of ram (actually had a gig) 60 Gig HD, bluetooth,, 2915 WIFI card, media base with CDRW/ DVD, and PSU. The battery seems to be OK too.

My opnion is that IBM did not manufacture many x32 laptops. The x32 series are not necessary much better than x31 or x4 series. The high price of x32 only reflects supply/demand.

You are correct in the respect of quantity. However, X32 is way more powerful than X31/40/41 because it has a full-blown Dothan CPU so you're basically looking at T42 (with weaker GPU) in a small shell. Most people would find this quite appetizing. And honestly, basic X60 will not be noticeably faster than X32 for most applications...

Personally, I'd take X32 even over X60 just for not having to look at the stupid and insulting windows key... :D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_M#Banias
This page states,

However, tests conducted by third party hardware review sites show that Banias and Dothan equipped notebooks have roughly equivalent battery life. Additionally third party hardware review sites have benchmarked the Dothan at approx 10-20% better performance than the Banias in most situations.

If you think 10-20% faster CPU speed is WAY BETTER, I am ok with that. But to me, it is at most "slightly" better.

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2438

The review shows that x32 has some advantantages such as 16MB video memory. But those advantages do not mean much in today's standard.

I'd personally rather had 16mb VGA card with dedicated memory than 128 or whatever meg card with shared memory.

@guanghua19:

The 10-20 percent advantage is had by Dothan CPUs of eqivalent speed. However, top-model X32s came with 2.0 Dothans vs. 1.7 Banias on top-of-the-line X31...so the real-life math is more like 30-35 percent here, and that is a noticeable difference...

It would be downright unfair comparing this beast with LV Banias CPUs used on X40, even with LV Dothans on X41...they wouldn't have a prayer.

The problem is that is it worth $200 or so?

X41 uses LV Dothans, and the fastest one was 1.6. X32 uses full-blown Dothans, with 2.0 being in the strongest version.

That fact alone (let's not talk about hard drives and GPUs) will leave X41 in dust when compared with X32...

My experience just going from a 1.8G to a 1.7G system board in one of my X32s was noticeable. My other X32 is a 2.0 and it "feels" much faster than the 1.7. Your everyday user that just surfs the web and uses email probably wouldn't notice much difference. What I find interesting though is an upgraded A31 with 32megs of VRAM, (same 7200 HD) feels almost as fast even with half the RAM. All that being said My X60 Tablet with XPTE smokes all of them hands down. I just don't enjoy using it as much as a laptop. The palmrest burning my wrist is the number one concern. OK that was enough topic swerve.
