X32 - Display runs for 30 seconds then goes black.

#1 Post by tgrevers » Tue Sep 30, 2008 5:13 am

Greetings. :)

First post here, this site is an excellent resource.

I have an X32, (2.0 GHz 1GB RAM, 60GB disc, docking pad) which has a display that runs for about 30 seconds, then goes black. I replaced the backlight and the inverter board with new ones, so I know they are both good. (It's not fun changing out the backlight on these, but I did it with just a couple dust specs.)

What I'm confused by is the fact that after I replaced the backlight, and I replaced the inverter board, the screen still doesn't stay lit for more than about 30 seconds, suggesting that they were not the problem to begin with. Once it goes black, it stays black until the machine has been off for a good long time. The external VGA port works fine on the dock and the back of the machine.

Does anyone have any advice on this? Is this something that could be related to the ribbon cable? Or is this something that suggests that a system boar is in my future?

Regards,

Welcome to the forum!

I hate to say it, but I've owned a X31 with the exact same symptoms, and new motherboard turned out to be the only cure.

Hope that you get luckier than I did.

I'll have to shop out a motherboard. It'd be a bummer if I replaced the backlight and the inverter board for nothing. What I did find though, was that the backlight was showing signs of age, having turned black on the ends. (I'll trust this is a sign of a failing backlight). I have an R50p that I'm working on now too, that has dark edges on the left and right.)

I guess it's time to either shop around for a parts machine, or sell this one outright..

If there are other suggestions, keep them coming. :) I can see through the dark screen that the LCD is still rendering the picture, just no backlight. :(
