X31 from Ebay came cracked...

#1 Post by flypenfly » Thu Oct 02, 2008 7:42 pm

Even though it was listed as "excellent" condition it came with three large cracks that were essentially just painted over.

I was wonder, would it be possible to buy just the front housing of the LCD by the hinges and the top cover palm rest area?

I don't need an entire LCD but the front screen facing plastic, not the lid.

Sounds like you received an X31 in the same condition like I did :) . Sure you could get those parts, but it might be hard to find just the front bezel that surrounds the LCD at a "good" price. I just bought these a few days ago:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0274688844 (lid assembly)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0274688849 (palmrest; 1 still left for sale)

An X31 lid and bezel (according to the seller) and a palmrest. My bezel (but not the lid) is broken and missing in a couple of places. The palmrest is cracked at the front left corner. Been looking around for these pieces on-and-off since July and I finally bit the bullet since both were offered by the same seller and I could get a combined shipping discount.

Search eBay and/or post a wanted ad here in the Marketplace.

A shame about the user facing side of the LCD screen plastic. The screen is perfect except for the painted over cracks. It would be a waste to spend $130 on a used LCD unit.

I'm debating whether to pursue a refund or not. I got a good deal at $270 for it but at minimum spec. It would have been a good deal I guess if it didn't come all cracked.

Go for a refund, add a few bucks and wait for a new X3x batch from BobA here in the forum's Marketplace...

I agree with ajkula66 and would ask for a refund. Buying small parts here and there can add up very quickly. You'll end up at $300 and at that price you would have a lot of good machines to choose from.

Ok well the sellers seems to be willing to cover the cost of the Bezel and the Palm rest... we'll see how it goes.

You're lucky if he/she makes good! The last laptop PC I bought from eBay came with a host of undisclosed problems and the auction owner would not make good ... which is happening more and more!

I've found it best to look for and buy in the Marketplace here. Haven't been hurt yet, and have in fact found, some of these guys are straight up front and you sometimes get MORE than what was expected (you're pleasantly surprised)!

I'm not sure I would push for a refund necessarily, here is why: a few years ago I bought a T23 on ebay and received a T22 instead. When I complained the seller gave me the option of a full refund OR I could keep the T22 and he shipped out a T23 on top of it.

While this may be a rare ocurrance its worth wording your complaint in a way so as to recieve the best solution.
