Useful to install vista without "special" lenovo

#1 Post by ssd_thinkpad » Fri Oct 03, 2008 3:15 am

What do I miss if I clean install vista SP 1 including all vista updates on my x40 without additional lenovo drivers from lenovo.com?

Hello you rude man ,

2 questions :

- Why use Vista on a machine that has not been conceived to run comfortably with such an OS ?
- What are the drivers that you don't want to install ?

I did not mean to be rude. As english is not my mother language, I am sorry if you feel offended. I want to install all drivers that will be updated via Windows Vista Update System. All other drivers (that have to be installed manually) I am thinking not to install. I am curious if these drivers are sufficient for running vista. What do I miss if not installing ibm/lenovo drivers manually?

Umm... I haven't tried it before... Below are some wild guesses...

- Some question marks in Device Manager
- The possibility of cannot use standby/sleep mode(s)
- The possibility of not having wired/wireless network connections
- Virtual optical drive

Seriously, why would you want to do that...? I understand some of the ThinkVantage utilities take quite a lot resources, but I think the drivers are mostly fine.

Of course, some of the drivers can be downloaded somewhere else (e.g. Intel for the WiFi adapter).

Still, I don't usually recommend getting hardware drivers from Windows Update. Cause according to my experience they're usually out-dated.

Cheers.

Lenovo vista drivers are sometimes outdated (intel chipset driver is version 6, instead of version 8 which is installed by windows vista update). This results in different power consuming. There are studies, that if you install lenovo driver as latest in installation progress (vista > sp1 > lenovo drivers) you'll end up consuming around 14 watt whereas if you install lenovo drivers first (vista > lenovo > sp1) you'll end up with only 9 watt power consumption. There's also a possibility that windows vista update does not updates manually installed drivers from lenovo. Not wanting to hassle with any of this I am considering not installing lenovo drivers at all.

If that is the case, do an install without the drivers, run microsoft update and then only install the lenovo drivers that update doesn't catch. Using Windows Compatible drivers shouldn't negatively affect performance (except for video). Some of the lenovo software is useful software and not just drivers. Like the Active Protection or OnScreen Display

All drivers that are not official vista update drivers are the problem: They can overwrite "actual" drivers that are already installed. For example lenovo intel chipset driver is version 6, installed driver is version 8. That could be a reason why there is such a big difference in power consuming if installing in a different way. I will use a ssd, so active protection is not adding security to my system.

You can choose which driver you want installed, just instead of auto search, select "choose from a list" and it will show the driver author and you can choose Microsoft or Lenovo
