X3 Ultrabase Repair

#1 Post by Harryc » Sun Oct 05, 2008 3:54 am

For those of you who have owned X3X Thinkpads/Ultrabases for some time, you'll know what I am about to talk about. At the front of the Ultrabase are 2 protruding tips. They are designed to catch the front end of the X3X, engage in (2) holes in the machine, and to keep the front of the machine locked down while docked. Over time, the black plastic on these (tips) chips away leaving bare metal which is likely to crack and/or scratch the X3X machine. I was thinking about how to repair these, and came up with Plasti dip. It is a synthetic rubber coating used mainly for tool grips. Does anyone have a better idea? It would have to go on liquid, dry hard as steel, stick to metal and plastic, and be black. The black part is just cosmetic.
Plasti Dip does come in black and in 7oz cans. I'm sure such a product might be useful for other Thinkpad repairs. In it's spray form you could even paint a Thinkpad LCD lid or palm rest I suppose. I also found it on EBay.

I am leaning toward J-B Weld only because I think it might be more durable over time. How about a 50/50 mixture of J-B Weld and Plasti Dip? :)
