x31 harddrive upgrade

#1 Post by lostdude » Sun Oct 05, 2008 7:14 am

Hi guys, recently got my hands on an x31 off ebay but it had a damaged lcd so the nice ebay dude gave me a replacement which is about 98% brand new  .
However after a week i'm running out of harddrive space and i'm thinking about getting an upgrade.
What brand of harddrive should i be getting if i need about 100gb, 5400rpm and one that runs cool. seagate, samsung or western digital?

thanks for your advice.

I've a seagate, and is very , very silent (+ I've not felt extra heat changing from a 4200 to a 5400 drive) ... and has 5 years of warranty, and this is a nice bonus

Just recently installed a 160G samsung HM160HC 5400RPM drive in my X31.

It basically FLIES (averages 57 MB/sec over the whole surface) with peaks in the outer tracks (where your boot files will be) reaching almost 70MB/s.

I believe this is the fastest PATA laptop drive still available. And they are not particularly expensive, I paid about $55 CDN).

They do have an issue with over-aggressive head parking which might result in shortened life, but it is readily fixed with NHC or other tools.

Hi guys, i got a western digital from my local comp shop cause thats all they had, its a 160gb scorpio IDE 5400rpm.
Do you guys get excess vibration and really loud noises from the drive after its installed?
i can now feel my x31 vibrate on the table after installing this drive?
anyfeed back is good , cause i'm wondering if its a problem with the drive itself.

I've been using a 100 gig Hitachi 7200 RPM drive in my X31 for over a year now... no vibration whatsoever. Runs like a champ!

Regards.

I do remember reading of that issue, lostdude, but am not sure what HDD it was. I personally upgraded to a 80GB Seagate and it is silent and no vibrations.

i use this identical HDD and it works wonderfully.

over the stock hiatachi 4200rpm 40GB HDD, it is a major difference.

this would be the HDD i recommend to those seeking a replacement on their x31.

Hi guys, this is my first post, so hello!

When i'd first come across this page aquarius hadn't posted his/her response, so that's already partly answered my question, but while i'm here, i was wondering what are the limitations and issues, if any, to look out for when looking for a replacement for the X31's drive? People have mentioned heat and such like on this thread, but i was wondering if things such as the RPM speeds were important to bear in mind and whether or not there was a maximum capacity or anything?

The 160GB samsung sounds good to me and i think i might go for that, but i just thought i'd check to see if anyone had any other opinions on whether that would still be most optimal replacement at the moment? There's this Seagate which is a bit cheaper, but i'm not sure if there's something fundamental about it that would make it not a good choice for the x31

thanks in advance! :)

That is a 3.5" hard disk drive. It will not fit in a X31. The X31 takes a 2.5" PATA drive.

I use Samsung because they are quiet and relatively fast. I have put together X31s for myself and relatives and friends. So I have about 20 X31s running Samsungs of varying ages and sizes and none have failed. All are quiet and cool.

I first started using them after reading on the Silent Desktop PC project. I now have two mid-towers that are so quiet you have to tap the keyboard to see if they are on. One of the project leaders started using Samsung notebook drives and recording the dbs, even better than the 3.5".

I couldn't slow back down to 5400 for some reason, so I keep the 3.5" in the towers, but the X31s are all Samsung. I have noticed only one or two HD that are ATA6 over 120Gb. One of them is a Samsung. I would check Newegg out they always have good prices on Samsung drives.
Main X31 Vista Ult 1.6Mhz CPU 2Gb RAM 160Gb HD Artheros 54Mbit Wifi,
3-X31s XP, X24 XP, X22 XP, X21 XP, lots of parts for all of them.
