X32 "bleeding" backlight *thumbed pics inside*

#1 Post by guidok » Fri Oct 10, 2008 7:18 pm

Hello,
today I got my X32 as a replacement for my beloved but gone T40p. The X32 was manufactured in May 2005, but is in an excellent condition (since there is no dust at all on or in this machine, I doubt it has ever been used), and the warranty is still valid until May 2009.

But as you can see, the display has a highly uneven level of brightness. The backlight seems to "bleed" at the left bottom part of the display.

Does anybody know if this is a common problem of the X32 series and is there anything I can do about it? I searched this forum, but was not able to find anything like this.

Since the warranty is still valid, is this covered by it?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Guido

This is not normal for any laptop... well, not a Thinkpad, anyways! Since it's still under warranty, you should call Lenovo and explain the problem. Might be good if you can email some photos to them too.

Good luck!

This is typical for any notebook with TN screen.

Looks like the backlight assembly is leaking light, either a poor design or poor assembly. The CCF has a metal reflective shield at the bottom and should shine all the light upward. The sheet lightpipe should catch the light at the edge and shine it evenly across the face of the lightpipe. There is usually some unevenness at the lower corners due to corner refraction/reflection. Edge leakage means the metal reflector is not lining up properly to the lightpipe sheet.

The backlight leakage is covered by warranty. Unfortunately I have no on-site service, so I have to send the machine in.

The nice idea of sending them pictures of the problem prior to sending in the machine was absolutely futile. Their call centre agents seem to think in a somewhat binary way, if broken send in, else have a nice day.

Compared to the brilliant on-site service I had with my previous Thinkpad, I am a little bit dissappointed.

Lets see when and in which condition the machine returns ;-)

Cheers,

Guido

Not to such an extent it isn't.

You may be able to upgrade to onsite service. It isn't cheap.
