Help with 2nd HDD in X4 for X40 operability

#1 Post by harlesd » Mon Oct 20, 2008 9:42 am

Hi - my first post. I searched previous posts and no matches so here goes:

I just installed a 2nd HDD in the X4 using OEM HDD tray/adapter for the X4 The drive is a Seagate Momentus 5400 160mb Ultra ATA drive. The drive was recognized, formatted and I assigned three volumes to use as a) backups and b) primary data storage for mp3's.

PROBLEM(s): the drive isn't recognized at boot but is recognized if I a) scan for changes in device manager and disck manager or b) if I insert the drive after boot of the machine. This I could/would live with.

The MAIN issue is that I can copy a few files from the primary drive to this new drive but if I attempt to send a large block of files it hangs up and windows reboots after about 70mb or so. This prevents me from saving a recovery file or to save a mirror image (my ulimtate goal though I haven't attempted this yet.)

Any insight / assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Harlesd,

I have an X41 Tablet with the X4 dock and a 160 gig Seagate Momentus 5400RPM hard drive.

I have the same problem with the drive not being recognized.
Have been popping it in only when I need to read / write with it.

Here is a post:

I haven't had any problems transferring large files.

With the Seagate drives being the common denominator, I wonder if there is some issue there?

Good health, Weogo

Hi Weogo,

thanks for the quick post - it may be the momentus drive I get a BSOD (blue screen) and windows crashes after about 70 - 85 mbs of transfer - small files or large files it doesn't seem to matter. I've tried the slave/cable-select jumpers settings on the HD but no difference. I've also tried assigning only 1 volume for the entire drive instead of the 3 I started with. I will try a complete format next instead of the quick format Seagate recommends as part of setup.

hopefully someone has another idea?

regards,

Harlesd

The interruption at 80mb was solved by a complete (not quick) format of the new segate HDD I am using in the ultraslim carrier.

To the question posed by Weogo, I also disabled power management for the ultrabay that affects the need for ejecting device from the sys tray before removal. (device manager - properties - advanced) So far so good on this change - the drive has been recognized after hot dock, dock in sleep mode or at cold boot.

thanks Weogo for your attempt - if you don't find the setting leave a post and I'll chase more details about the change I made and post them for you.
