Best WiFi card for X31?

#1 Post by vincentfox » Sat Oct 25, 2008 4:59 pm

What is the BEST WiFi card for X31?

Originally had a Cisco 802.11b card which I replaced.

I got an Atheros card a while back, not happy with it. Labelled AR5BMB-44, turns out after hours of research this is AR5004 class. Dig around a lot finding drivers a PITA! Also the A mode doesn't seem to work very reliably so I am just running G at the moment.

I have 802.11a/b/g AP in the house. Ideally want to run everything in 802.11a mode to avoid interference from all neighbors who are running b/g stuff.

Reliable, easy to get, easy to find DRIVERS, sick of fiddling with this stuff. Help please?

If you're unhappy with Atheros, I suggest trying out Intel 2915ABG.

Another option would be Broadcom 4309.

Good luck.

I found a used 2915ABG through Amazon and the ad claims "Lenovo" in the title so I'll assume it will work fine in X31.

Thanks!

I have an Intel ABG card in my X31 and have been happy with it. The Intel cards seems to perform slightly better than the Atheros cards, at least in the machines I've used. I'm sure some people will disagree.

I just wanted to report back in.

I got the Intel 2915ABG card in the mail and popped it in. Thanks to the excellent IBM service manuals it's easy to understand how to remove keyboard to get to the card.

Card works fantastic, and I am one step closer to an 802.11a household. Drivers very easy to find unlike Atheros. Reception very good and stable.

Remaining problem child is "Samantha" my Samsung Q1 Ultra, which ships with Atheros BG card. I tried Intel 3945ABG card in there but for some reason it's not recognized. Perhaps similar to IBM they only recognize "approved" cards but this is not a problem for this forum.....

i've been really happy with mine. *see sig
it only a b/g card, so it wouldn't meet your needs.
however, for others reading this thread, it's a good alternative.

I had an IBM branded Intel 2915ABG and it had problems with our setup in that it would connect for a while then drop off and refuse to connect again for another half an hour or so despite rebooting and switching the computer off. I swapped that for an IBM branded Atheros card (IBM Thinkpad 802.11abg Mini PCI card II) and have not looked back. It has excellent performance, the drivers can be downloaded straight from Lenovo's web site and the range is excellent.
