Problems with power supply adapter in my X40

#1 Post by michalis » Tue Nov 18, 2008 4:51 pm

Hello,

A few months ago I bought used IBM x40 form reseller, who appeared to be not too honest.
After changeing keyboard, which was faulty, it appeared that there is one more problem.
With this computer I got power supply adapter 16v 3,36A which was not the original IBM adapter.
At the beggining it appeared that it doesn't want to interact with my Surge protector but when pluged into the normal outlet it works properly.
Unfortunately after one month it appeared that from time to time it disconnects when moving my computer.
Now I have to twist the cords in many ways to make power adapter work.
I decided to buy on ebay orginal one, which is also 3,36A and 16v, but it appeared that there is the same problem, then I used adapter of my friend, orginal one 4,5A and 16v and it appeared that it works perfectly.
Does someone have idea, wheter it is caused by too little amount of power it gets (on the bottom it is written that it should be 3,5A and both adapters have 3,36A) or my computer is faulty?
I tried removing battery and disconnecting AC
and then pressing and holding power switch down for 15 secs but is doesn't help.
Thanks in advance for any help and any ideas.

Greetings, Michal

Michal,

Just let you know my x40 works well with 3.36a or 4.5a AC adapters. So I guess that the problem is in your laptop, not the adapters.

My X40 also had some problems recently with a 3.5A adapter (cable bending required and such), but I have put my adapter on the desk and have not moved it since weeks it always functions perfectly.

With my brothers original X20 adapter everything works fine, I do not know however what are its characteristics. I'd blame the adapter, but am not sure myself either.
Mine: X40, 1.4LV, 8cell, 1GB RAM, 40GB,
Brothers:X21, 700Mhz, 320MB RAM, 120GB

Thanks for the answer, at the beggining I was also blaming my adapter, but now I am almost 100% sure that something is wrong with my computer:( I am very curious what exactely, because as I mentioned with original IBM 16v 4,5A AC adapter it works without any problems. I hope it is going to work without any problems with the adapter which I now bought.
