Doing a reformat... what drivers would you reinstall?

#1 Post by Pinny » Mon Dec 01, 2008 11:38 am

Just formated my x40. I'm trying to keep things clean and polished so I only want to install drivers for things I need or that will speed up the pc, and I'm also trying to do it via the .inf's (so I don't have useless software installed, creating conflicts and slowing things down).

So far I installed:

ethernet
power management
sound
video
wifi

All these were done through just the .inf's.

I'm thinking to install the hotkey software although I'll obviously have to install the program. No biggie.

What other things would you add to a clean install?
Maybe chipset drivers or battery utility? It used to be you needed to install chipset drivers to get your pc moving at faster than a crawl, but last time I formatted, I installed them and benchmarked no difference (using Passmark 6.0).

Thanks in advance for suggestions,
Pinny

If you used the Recovery CDs to install to Factory Condition, I believe the chipset drivers are installed automatically... so, installing a newer version may or may not make a benchmark difference. If you did a clean install from a stand-alone XP disc, then you do need to install the chipset drivers, as without them, windows won't know how to correctly communicate with the computer. Several buses won't be correctly configured without the chipset driver. In fact, you would see several inop (yellow or red) devices in Device manager.
