Booting from a USB CD-Rom Drive

#1 Post by ajgiampa » Sat Dec 06, 2008 9:16 am

I am trying to re-install windows XP on my X22 laptop. Since the X22 doesn't have a CD or Floppy drive, I'm trying to boot from a USB CD-Rom drive. I've updated the BIOS and embedded controller to the most recent versions.

When I enter the boot menu, I select the attached devices option (not CD-Rom) but the only item that appears when this option is expanded is a removable floppy drive. I double checked the USB booting is enabled in the BIOS. Anyway, when it boots it says "no operating system found", and I'm pretty sure the CD isn't being accessed.

Anyone ever have similar problems? Any ideas as to how to get this to work? It seems kind of odd that a computer with no integrated drives wouldn't have some means of booting from a USB device.

I have no experience with the problem, but this web site
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installat ... -ROM_drive discusses the problem and some alternatives. In addition, their table says a usb cd reader should work with the X22:
