Upgrading X31 Hard Drive - Should I use the recovery disks?

#1 Post by ernienet » Wed Dec 10, 2008 6:51 pm

My original X31, circa April 2003, is getting a new Seagate Momentus 250 GB 7200 RPM drive to replace the 60 GB drive, which is packed to the gills!

I have the 5-disk Product Recovery disks that came with my last replacement (which died just a week before the 3-year warranty expired - whew!). I also have a Windows XP Pro upgrade disk that I used to upgrade an old Windows ME desktop PC that's no longer in use.

Is there any reason I should use the Product Recovery disks instead of doing a fresh XP install? I should be able to get the drivers I need from the Lenovo web site, right?

Thank you,
Ernie

I would do a fresh XP SP3 install, and then install updated drivers and software from IBM.
(Download the drivers and software and copy it to an USB stick or burn it to a CD before installing, make sure you have all the drivers needed first).
Don't see the point in installing from old recovery disks with old XP, drivers and software, and then to update it all again to new versions, much better to have a fresh install without all IBM BloatWare.

Check here for drivers (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... yle=lenovo)
and select your type & model.

Just as I suspected. Thank you!
