X31 Supervisor password problem

#1 Post by UltraLight » Thu Dec 11, 2008 7:47 am

Hi, to start off I understand the forum rules on asking about "Password circumvention" and etc. That is not what I'm asking.

My problem is that I got my X31 about a year ago. I love it to death, and since I travel alot with it I set up the boot password, HD password, and supervisor password. I made all the passwords the same thing, now my problem is that when I attempt to log in to change any of the bios settings I cannot. It says that I need to log in as the Supervisor, I thought that is what I was doing. :(

I understand that I enter the supervisor password and it logs in as supervisor, but all my passwords are the same. Am I doing something wrong? F1 at start-up, password prompt and I enter my password, then security and password. But it says that as "User" I cannot change settings.

Can anyone please help me? I'm way out of ideas.

You should have made your supervisor password different than your user password. How is the BIOS supposed to know the difference?
Can you change your user password?

Ok I have finally found the answer to my problem. I thought that I had put the right password, and the same for all the passwords. Turns out that the I did not take the minimum password length into consideration. It cut my password short and I did not realize that. I ended up having to find a tutorial on how to build a security chip reader and extracted the password. It was my password but it was shot by 5 characters.

I want to thank the forum for prohibiting the conversation of password circumvention. It keeps us all honest and limits the information necessary for those looking to steal IBM laptops and the valueable information on.

My recommendation is to never use the same password for the BIOS (supervisor) and the hard drive. Doing so can compromise your data's security if that password is ever discovered.
