X31 - slow down during keyboarding?

#1 Post by ozone » Sat Jan 15, 2005 2:35 am

My one month old X31 seems to have a randomly occurring problem. As I type, every now and then for no apparent reason, the input from the keyboard will suddenly slow down and not register on the screen. It almost seems as if the processor is working on something in the background, but I can't tell. And then, all the letters input but not on the screen will suddenly appear on the screen, and then I'm back to normal. Of course, this screws up typing because I can't delete what hasn't yet appeared yet.

Any suggestions or comments as to what's going on? Thanks.

Well, thanks to the two of you for responding. At least I know I'm not alone! Actually, for me, the slowdown seems to happen at random, but where it often happens (but not always) is when I connect my PocketPC to the computer to synchronize. I have it password protected, and so a dialog box pops up on the X31 for me to input my password. When I do, it sometimes grinds away for about 10 seconds as I can only see the first one or two letters registering on the screen... and then it's suddenly back to normal.

I'm also seeing it on my X31 1.4GHz refurb I just bought off eBay.

The model # on the bottom of my X31 is 2673-XX4 although "Access IBM" is reporting my model # as 2373-XX4.

Yes... mine's a 1.3 GHz "new" (actually refurb) off of EBay as well. I upped the Ram to 768 MB and put in a 60 GB 5400 rpm hard drive. Still get the keyboarding slowdown periodically.

I'm not sure this is Windows related. I've have (had) three other laptops/tablets running Windows XPP, and nonedisplayed th eproblem I'm referring to. In fact, it did it again just now - and I'll just leave the mistakes as they are. The slowdown really messes up typing.

I met this prolem before when I was typing Chinese words. My solution is uninstalling the software " Keyboard Customizer Utility". I never met this problem again since I uninstalled it.

My laptop is 1.3 GHz CPU and 512 MB RAM

For you reference

Hmmm... I forgot about the keyboard customizer utility. I went to check it, realized it was disabled. I'm going to try enabling it, and then seeing how it performs, and then maybe disabling it.

Thanks.

But I am using Keyboard Customizer Utility on the 1.6GHz and no slow down... odd...? I will try removing it on the 1.4GHz and see what happens.

Well, I forgot about this keyboard utility and enabled it. No help... just as bad as ever, if not worse. So, I deleted it. No more problems so far. (Fingers crossed.)

Very weird. But to tell the truth, the only button I care about is the remapping of the ALT button to the Windows START. Any 3rd party utilities that can do this?

I have a method which can remap the right Alt button to START key
Open the notepad and copy the following words to the new file

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,5b,e0,38,e0,00,00,00,00

Then save the file as winkey.reg
Execute the new file( just double click the file) and reboot the computer. You will have a new START key.

I had the same problem. The solution is to update to latest version of the Keyboard customizer utility. Software Installer does not offer it so you have to install it manually from web http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 44185.html

Preinstalled version on my X31 was 1.1.5, the problem was fixed later. From Readme.txt file:
<1.1.7>
- (Fix) HCT Test Problem fix
- (Fix) Slow key input problem fix: After boot or returning normal
mode from standby mode, key input getting slow sometimes.
