X31 CPU Fan Stops

#1 Post by londonarnold » Mon Dec 29, 2008 8:30 am

Hi,

I've got an X31 which boots to BIOS successfully, though after a couple of minutes the CPU fan stops spinning - I'm using a cooling platform but only for a few minutes - I don't want to brick the X31!

There is no OS or hard drive installled yet.

It seems that fixing this will involve something more than just modifying the acpi settings in the BIOS ?

If anyone can help at all I would be very gratefull.

Happy New Year,

My X31 (1.4GHz model) only ever needed its fan when it was doing some serious number crunching. From what I remember, the base of the unit always ran hot, but there were no ill effects from the temperature.

Thanks for that.

It's the 1.4Ghz model also. Type 2672. It has 256Mb RAM at the moment and the wifi card is present, but no hdd yet.

I'll also have a look at the cpu and heatsink as it was getting seriously hot before I used the cooling pad.

Cheers,

X31 is a well built machine. Mine was running lap scorchingly hot for quite some time without ill effect. Until I found out the heat sink vent was completely clog.

You can check yours by opening the keyboard, unscrew the fan assembly and take it out. The casing of the fan is held by 3 aluminum hooks, they are soft, just ply them open. While you are at it, clean the rotor and stator, add some bearing grease.

Don't forget to re-apply heatsink compound on the cpu when you put it back.

Oh, one more thing. The fan starts when cpu reaches 65 degree C, then stops when it is below 55.

Mine is running XP, so I now use tpfancontrol to start the fan at 55 and stop it at 50. Figure that a 5 year old machine might need some gentle treatment.

Bear in mind that mobile CPUs tend to get much hotter than their desktop counterparts, and they can handle the heat better. My laptops tend to hang around 45 to 50 degrees C at idle; my desktop stays at about 30.
