X31 - Booting from a USB

#1 Post by jimjam » Mon Jan 12, 2009 10:49 am

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been asked before - but I did try the search function and couldn't find an answer.

I've apprehended an x31 (i've wanted one for ages!!)

It comes with a 20gb hd and 512mb of ram.

So I'm using a 120gb and its upgraded to 1.5gb of ram now.

My question is:
What steps do I need to take to boot from a usb flash drive?

I'm looking to partition the hard drive with windows 7 and XP installed. I can't seem to find a way to boot from the USB.

This comes up in boot devices:
iba 4.1.07 0240 (i assume this is the memory stick!)

Thanks.

Hit F12 at the boot screen and select that device...assuming it is properly prepared and tested bootable in another machine.

I've updated the bios and now i can see it in the boot menu. I'll test it on my PC to see if i've done it correctly and it is infact bootable.

I've noticed my x31's fan is quite loud. Is this normal or is there a setting i can change or does it need a blast of canned air?

Okay, after googling - i think i've found the problem:

There is a password on the BIOS that was set by a previous user. I bought this off ebay. Is there a default password and can i lock myself out of the system by trying to enter passwords? Or is there any other way around this?

This is very annoying!

Thanks,
James
