Cabling of ZIF drives
Just noticed that the adapters I have coming include cabling for Toshiba and Hitachi. Is there an entirely different cable required for Samsung drives? I;d prefer the 5400 RPM of their drives if at all possible.
Thanks,
David

Re: Cabling of ZIF drives
Toshiba drives use the thinner cable end that is white in color. Other drive such as Hitachi, Samsung use the blue end that is a little thicker.

Re: Cabling of ZIF drives
Just be sure to not buy a drive that uses the CE-ATA interface. They are sometimes listed as ZIF drives, but are entirely different.

I was looking at these. They seem to not be the Cf/IDE type, correct?

Those are the correct type, though that document doesn't seem to indicate it. For an example of not the correct type, search for Samsung HS161JQ. Some places list it as a ZIF or SATA, and it is neither.dwilsonfl wrote:http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/s ... /specs.htm

The 120GB is what Harry used in his project. They are rare and hard to find.dwilsonfl wrote:http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/s ... /specs.htm

Re: Cabling of ZIF drives
The HS161JQ should be CE-ATA with ZIF connector (smaller). Newer iPods are using these drives.uux wrote:...

Basically there are three types of interface for 1.8 inch HDD:
1. PATA with pins header (used in X40/X41)
2. PATA with ZIF (wider)
3. CE-ATA with ZIF (narrower, a type of SATA)

Re: Cabling of ZIF drives
Correct. That would be an example of the wrong drive, as I stated. That particular drive has been mentioned several times now. Due to the fact that the CE-ATA connector is ZIF/LIF, there seems to be some confusion on what is compatible. Not only here, but people looking for EEE PC drive replacements, or even iPods. Even though the Dell document referred to is listing the correct drives, it makes no mention of the interface / connector type used. It's important to realize there are more than one when the word "ZIF" is used.sjthinkpader wrote:The HS161JQ should be CE-ATA with ZIF connector (smaller). Newer iPods are using these drives.
There are also 1.8" SATA drives. Not that it matters much. They're generally not listed as ZIF type.sjthinkpader wrote: Basically there are three types of interface for 1.8 inch HDD:

What about that one?
When I compared the specs it appeared just as fast as the 5400rpm one even though it's listed as 4200rpm.

Re: Cabling of ZIF drives
Looks like a 5mm thick drive so it should fit into a X40 with an IDE/ZIF adapter easier. I tested a Hitachi 4200RPM 1.8 inch drive and it should be comparable in performance. See my benchmarking thread.
