Recommend Replacement AC adapter for X31?

#1 Post by elray » Sun Jan 25, 2009 6:06 pm

The insulating jacket about the DC plug on my AC power adapter is fraying, showing what appears to be a coax mesh, so I figure its time to acquire a replacement. The failing unit is #8K8205. I have entombed it in a stiff cast of electrical tape, but I expect that will only last for a few weeks.

Is there a replacement adapter that won't fall apart so easily?

Doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with the power unit. It just needs the DC power plug replacing. I did this for my grandson's X31 only a couple of weeks ago. And anyway, what the hell you been doing to get it in that state (same words as for grandson).

Not much cable between the plug and the ferrite suppressor, so you need to cut away old plug with a Stanley knife, and carefully unsolder the cable.

DC plugs come in a variety of sizes, and you need to be certain you've got the right one. Any good electro parts shop should have a selection. Take the laptop (or an ultrabay dock) with you to check that you get the right one.

If you don't feel up to doing the job yourself, any competent do-it-yourselfer should be able to do it. Last resort: take it to a repair shop - and don't let them bamboozle you into buying a whole new supply unit.

And a question to the wider community: is there a way of getting back to your carefully crafted script, after you've been diverted to log in (again) for being too tardy in composing it. I'm getting fed up of that happening, and often decide not to reinput the info as a result. In this case I'll copy it (ready to paste), but there must be a better way.

Return edit: yep ............ it threw me off - again! The first go was more detailed ........
