Re: Help I have a 240 with 2 partitaion
If you don't have a PCMCIA CD then then you'll have to attach the hard drive to another computer and copy Windows 98(SE) and Windows XP CDs onto it. You need both Windows versions because XP won't install from DOS but 98 will.
There are HD adapters available on eBay if you don't have one.
While you're at it, copy all the necesary drivers from IMBM/Lenovo Driver Matrix web page. Put the drive back into the 240, boot up with a WIN 98 boot disk in the floppy. Install Windows 98 as basically as possible, then install XP.
This hassle is the reason the 240 series never took off like it should, I ended up with an X40 (and dock) which is only 1/2" bigger, lighter, way more powerful and has none of these problems.
Good luck

First off, this is in the wrong section of the forum. Hopefully one of the mods will move it to where it belongs.
Since you have a USB/HDD adapter and a floppy, you should be able to get an operating system back on the 240.
1. Connect your 240 hard drive to the USB adapter on another computer. Copy the contents of the Windows XP CD onto the drive. Put it in a folder named WinXP or something similar that's easy to remember.
2. Make a Win98 Boot floppy boot disk with your PC running Win98.
3. Put the HDD back in the 240, plug in floppy with boot disk. Power on.
4. From the Dos prompt, navigate to the i386 folder within WinXP folder you made earlier. Run the winnt.exe file to start intalling XP.
5. Make sure you choose the right partition to put it on.

Re: Help I have a 240 with 2 partitaion
Some questions
1. What kind of operating system is on your operational computer with the floppy?
2. What drives are available and how are they connected?

Re: Help I have a 240 with 2 partitaion
Have you copied the copied the contents of your XP CD onto the new hard drive using your USB adapter?
1. Boot up your 240 using the floppy you made. At the a: prompt, type "C:" and navigate to the folder where you put the XP files. E.g. type "cd WinXP" if your folder is named WinXP
2. From the c:\WinXP prompt type "cd i386"
3. Type winnt.exe
Winnt.exe will start the XP installation.
edit: Don't type the quotes.

Re: Help I have a 240 with 2 partitaion
I think the USB and PCMCIA should load with XP. You'll have to get online to download other drivers from the IBM/Lenovo site (and update to XP SP3). Or take out the hard drive again and download whatever drivers you need through another computer etc, etc.
Now you see why the X40 is starting to look real good!

Re: Help I have a 240 with 2 partitaion
As tim s said, the USB and PCMCIA drivers should be installed with XP. You'll want to go to your Control Panel and under System check out what hardware needs drivers. Drivers can be found at: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 2DLNW.html
You can transfer drivers to your 240 by using your USB/HDD adapter. If you have a USB flash drive, that would be real convenient.
