[x40] memory upgrade - questions

#1 Post by starfox » Sun Mar 01, 2009 1:25 pm

Hi!

I would to upgrade a bit my memory in order to launch some heavy and greedy applications.
After reading the user guide, I noted that IBM makes always reference to PC2700. However,
as far as I know my x40 as its FSB set @100MHz, therefore their are the questions:

1 - what is the maximum fsb speed supported by the x40 motherboard?
2 - what is the type of the on-board memory and is it exchangeable?
3 - is it possible to install 1GB in the extension slot? (to reach the 1.5GB max)
4 - if the maximum fsb speed is 100MHz is there a way to tweak it? (hard mod...)

Thank you for your help guys!

Don't underestimate the fsb...it's "quad-pumped", which is why you often see it also being called 400mhz. More than enough to handle PC2700. For some reason Intel didn't think PC3200 would be of any benefit though.

So the chipset only officially supports 100mhz fsb and PC2700. Mods have been done for T4x to get the 133 bus, but I don't think anyone's done it for an X40 so you need to figure out some new things.

The thing is if you install a pc-2700 memory on a motherboard set to run fsb@100MHz there is no benefits having this pc-2700. Anyway, you only find pc-2700 in the market today.

I have seen this mod and that is why I was wondering if someone already did it.

There is still two questions pending. Thanks anyway for your answers

Some of it is related to increased CAS latency for PC3200 from PC2700. The overall access speed from RAS and CAS hasn't improved much from 20 years ago. Improvement is from pipelined burst speed as clock frequency goes up (cycle time goes down).

Onboard memory is soldered so it will be difficult to change it.

Expansion slot maximum is 1GB DDR SODIMM. Maximum system total depends on the MB version you have, 256MB or 512MB. I think my X40 is 256MB version so maximum RAM size will be 1.25GB.
