X3, X4 video performance.

#1 Post by gradbieg » Tue Mar 03, 2009 7:25 pm

Hello. My T23 cannot cope with Google Earth 5.0 or the new Netflix (Silverlight) viewer. I have a FIOS connection which should be adequate but the CPU goes to 100% and the system struggles. I'm wondering how well an X32 or X41 would do for these specific uses. Any experience to share?

nothing specific, but the X31 has a discrete ATI Radeon graphics card with 16mb VRAM and a 144mhz GPU which is probably greater than a T23. also has the possibility of up to 1.7ghz Pentium M processor (faster than the Pentium III-m in the T23), and up to 2gb of RAM, which would probably be adequate, but the processor can't actually be upgraded without buying a new motherboard, but even a 1.3ghz Pentium M should be faster than a Pentium III-m (pretty sure, anyway)
for more accurate bench marks, I have not had any trouble with most online videos (ie youtube, etc), I was actually able to get compiz-fusion running w/ XFCE under Arch Linux (slowly, but still running. it did freeze frequently though. lol) I wasn't able to run sauerbraten comfortably, but I was able to run cube-engine very adequately. web browsing and word processing were fine.
Frankenpad X31.5 (X31 casing, X32 motherboard) 1.8ghz Pentium M processor, 1gb RAM,
60gb HDD dual booting Arch GNU/Linux && Windows XP

X32 will handle it easily with its ATI Radeon 7000 GPU. The X41 uses Intel Graphics Media Accelerator, an Oxymoron if I ever saw one.

My X-32, 2.0mhz, 1gig ram, handles Google Earth no problem. Can't comment on Netflix, as I have not used it.

I love how so many people are so quick to dismiss the GMA 900. It's much more powerful than we credit it. I play Quake 3 at 1024x768 no problem on it. I'm regularly playing N64 and SNES games in emulators (ZSNES uses OpenGL for the graphics overlay).

If you're looking at a Linux platform, I think you'll find better support for the GMA 900 than the Radeon 7000, though that may have changed in the recent past.

The X41 is quite a capable machine.

I won't go so far as to call it capable, but it's not "that bad".
I ran my X31 and my X41t with ePSXe, and they are about the same in performance. Both are okay performers for the older stuff, but nothing really to write home about.

The X40 is the real dog in the group (i855GME, + Banias if I remember right).
Proxima - X31 (2672-C2U)
Pegasus - X31 (2672-CXU)
Taurus - X24 (2662-MQU)
Nova - X41 Tablet (1869-CSU)
