Thanks for the other examples of this hack. No example worked for the GA version of Win 7.

I'm pleased with how well Win 7 kept puting my system back together after I would hose it with legacy drivers.

I'm stopping now and letting Standard VGA do it's best. Here's how it pans out:

Dock and undock - only works if I heibernate - OK
Dual Display - No dice - Will do without
Control to external display - Not working

I try it and video now working like a champ! It very simple to use. No need many restart's or anything else. Everything work's great with this solution for me. No problems with video driver at all.

As an additional tip:

In Win 7 System Configuration Administrative Tool, Boot tab, tick "OS boot information".

This essential tip came from a brilliant Indian. Please forgive my inability to provide complete attribution.

Without this tip, Win7 blue-screened at the "three glowing ball" boot screen. The essential tick skips the offending boot screen.

Ticking "No GUI Boot" may also skip the offending boot screen. After my system worked, testing alternative solutions was beyond my interest and risk profile.

My X40-2371, 1.5Gb RAM, Kingspec SSD, runs Win7 with Intel graphics driver version 6.14.10.4656. Device Manager redundantly describes the display adapter as:
Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller (Microsoft Corporation - XDDM)

With the installation of a functional graphics driver, Win7 improves X40 performance, especially boot time.

My disappointment is that Lenovo began constraining various ThinkVantage installers so that Win7 versions no longer install on a X40. Constrained ThinkVantage installers are consistent with planned obsolescence: inconsistent with extending the utility of installed machines.

The IBM "lowest total cost of ownership" promise prompted my switch from Toshiba to ThinkPad. Constrained ThinkVantage installers betray the "lowest total cost of ownership" promise.

Lenovo cannot guarantee that Win7 ThinkVantage utilities will function on a X40. Some users install Win7 without properly fudging a functional graphics driver--notwithstanding the possibility of a Lenovo-adapted Win7 graphics driver for X40--unless Lenovo acts with Intel to enforce planned obsolescence.

However Intel may control graphics drivers ... when Lenovo constrains ThinkVantage installers, Lenovo independently enforces planned obsolescence.

Instead of silently constraining ThinkVantage installers, Lenovo could display a warning, then force each user to accept the risks (and benefits) of Win7 ThinkVantage utilities on an X40, explicitly without Lenovo support or guarantee. This alternative would allow users to extend the utility of older machines, clearly at user risk, to the extent ThinkVantage utilities add value.

Maybe I could hack ThinkVantage installers to overcome the X40-Win7 constraint ... except ThinkVantage utilities do not add as much value as before. This realization liberates my return to Toshiba.

My X and T Thinkpads have needed a replacement CPU fan, a replacement graphic connector and a replacement keyboard. My even older Toshiba Portege and Tecra keep running with only a replaced keyboard.

Does anybody actually use x40 with win7? Is it worth going this way, or device is slow. My father uses x40, and i own new, unpacked 32GB SSD for it. So I dont know which way to go - give him the SSD to use with Win7 or just sell it

I have Win 7 Ultimate up and runing on a X40 ( 512Mb)
Faster than XP Pro.
Here's what I did to have it work

- Do a fresh Install of Windows 7

- Get Internet access (Plug ethernet cable and let windows update all the driver)

- Graphics driver are not installed properly to fix that there is many how to guide
and I almost tried them all , here's what worked best form me and painlessly

I used this drive
Intel(R) Graphics Controller 6.14.10.3722 (Windows)

Put your Display in High Resolution (1024 x 768)
Right click on Desktop ...then choose resolution...

Go to Device Manager -> Display Adapter
you should see
> Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME ....
> Generic VGA.....

Right Click on >> Generic VGA ... > [ uninstall ]
DO NOT RESTART Your computer


Ricght Click on >> Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME .... > [ Update Driver ..]
then direct it to the Driver that you downloaded (Intel(R) Graphics Controller 6.14.10.3722 )

Let the computer install the driver
Than restart the computer ,

I had to restart my computer about 3 times
at the last restart it will show you this

I've done the install, but my device manager does not look like what you say. At Display Adapter, I only have Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, and under Other Devices, I have Video Controller that is not working. How did you get to your starting Device Manager condition?

This worked for me, but only after I tried some others and reinstalled Windows to get rid of the duplicate drivers I ended up with. Nice to have some video acceleration at last. Use the 3732 driver to get the sleep function working.

Now, on to Bluetooth. The Vista Driver for Bluetooth III does allow the radio to turn on with Fn+F5, and I can see devices, but nothing connects. My recollection is that when my 2371 had this working in XP it used the Bluetooth II driver. Anyone solved this one yet?
