2 gigs in an x31????

Yeah I think that 2 gig's is allowed but really not needed.. 1 gig is probably the max you could practically use, especially on battery power. UNLESS you are commited enough to run everything from a ram drive as to save on HD access

X31 will support 2Gb and I have not found it to be any more or less picky that any of the present generation boxes .. as far as the X40 is concerned, max is 1.5GB assuming you buy a model preloaded with 512MB, as the memory is soldered to the planar, otherwise it's 1.25 GB for you!

I have a 1.25 GB of Crucial RAM and a 7200 rpm 60 GB drive (from a T41) in my 1.6 GHz x31, and I still get 4+ hours of battery life with wireless active. Memory doesn't really use up a lot of power.

But, boy, does Photoshop ever fly with that extra gigabyte and the 7200 rpm disk! That tells me I made the right choice picking the x31 over the x40.

I Agree,

I have an X31 and I've just upgraded to 1.5GB RAM and the 7200K HD.

The improvement in performance is instantaneous. Everything is a lot smoother and so many of the little things like printing happen with a lot less delay.

I also haven't noticed any power drain.

I miss my X31 days .. the CF slot was perfect for my digital pics when I went on trips. The X40 is a great performer but sadly I don't use an SD stick so I am SOL and have to resort to the good old fashioned PCMCIA adapter.

The built-in CF slot is nice for occasional use, but it's not very fast (well, OK, about the same as a standard PCMCIA adapter). Since my camera doesn't have Firewire or USB2 (x31 has both), I'll still use my CardBus CF adapter to get 2 GB of photos off the camera quickly -- probably 4x the speed of the standard CF slot/PCMCIA card.

while I agree 1gb of ram is most of the time enough my needs are somehow special(I run oracle 10i + app server + some other servers on my x31)
I guess I'll swap a 512 module for a 1gb one... only thing left is what brand. I saw some "good" offers for some swissbit modules but swissbit doesn't tell me much... any idea whether it's good enough for a x31?
