Upgrading x41 Tablet hard drive

#1 Post by demonic_pascal » Mon Mar 30, 2009 6:05 pm

Hey. I'm new to Thinkpads, as I'm a recent convert from Apple's camp. I was looking at getting a Thinkpad X41 Tablet off of eBay for $300, but the 1.8" hard drive has me worried. After doing quite a few Google searches, I've found that, apparently, the hard drive bay was designed rather oddly so that most 1.8" drives don't work with it.

I'm considering either the $300 x41, or a $430 x60, which, even though it doesnt have a tablet screen, it does have a much better CPU and a standard 2.5" hard drive bay. I'd prefer a tablet though, so if it is possible to get a replacable hard drive for the x41 somewhere, I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

Thanks

There are a few options. Feel free to look at the topics listing. Unfortunately there isn't anything as cheap/easy as upgrading a 2.5" drive.

The options for the x40/x41(t) are probably limited to around 60GB. Look at the CF/SSD topics. There are also a couple of ZIF options.

I went with the CF option since I didn't need much space and it was only used as an ultra portable system for web browsing, reading and other small tasks. Went from original 40GB 1.8" drive to a 8GB CF card with adapter. It's a lot less space, but much faster.
X22 - 800mhz - 640MB RAM - 60GB Hitachi 7200rpm 7k100
X40 - 1.4ghz - 1.5GB RAM - 8GB Transcend 300x CF on Addonics CF/IDE Adapter
T42p - 1.8ghz - 15" UXGA - 1GB RAM - 160GB HDD
X61t - C2D 1.6ghz - 12.1" SXGA+ - 8GB RAM - Intel G3 300GB SSD

Ahh, so direct options are rather limited, I figured as much...disappointing...

Shoehorning a 32 GB CompactFlash card in there could be interesting. A few more Google searches revealed that the older ThinkPad x31 used a 2.5" bay, and, according to notebookreview, had a sturdier chassis. There's one on eBay for just over $200, which model would you recommend, given the price? Is there a difference between the x31 and x41? Spec-wise, they seem rather equivalent...

The X31 is slightly heavier and bulkier... that's it. I'd prefer the X31 because of the 2.5 hard drive.
