Some X31 questions.

#1 Post by Arkor » Thu Apr 02, 2009 8:25 pm

I know a few of these might of been answered, so pardon me for that.

A while ago in 2007 I picked up a broken X31 that would only turn on when I pushed on the GPU. I assumed the GPU was broken because it was dropped while in its MediaSlice or by wear and tear. Are video failures known in the X31 by any sort of correlation to the MediaSlice usage or was this just a coincidence. It used to power up but I don't think I can right now (might look into it later however).

My current X31 was built in 2005, and so far it's holding up quite well even though due to the other X31 I rarely use the dock (or if I do use it I might leave it on for months at a time). When docking I put my thumbs on the hinges and firmly snap it down. I've only had it since 2007 when I bought it, but use it nearly everyday since I had it.

The only other issue is that the laptop generates a loud buzzing when applying more than 2 amps to the battery.

Any thoughts?

I'd suggest taking the laptop all the way apart and putting it back together. for a while I was having an issue with random power-offs where I couldn't turn it back on unless I waited a really long time. I thought it might be the power source, but either way it could help. I haven't had random power-off / inability to power-on issues since I did that.

GPU solder failure is a known issue in the 31/32 series - The motherboard is not internally braced using, say, metallic components, and since it has 3 chips in the same area the torsion stress is pretty bad. You can try and wedge some paper underneath it to force the chips down, or try the hot-air gun treatment (the same technique used to "fix" early X-Box 360s). I would say just pick up a new board (they should be extremely cheap these days on eBay) and swap it out. When you carry it around, put a magazine underneath it for additional support.
