x20 win xp boot up time??

#1 Post by n00b1337 » Sat Jan 29, 2005 2:17 am

i'm wondering because my x21 is taking 2.5 minutes to boot into xp with 128mb of ram. is this because of my ram or maybe my hd? oh yeh the hd is making a whining noise too so i'm thinking maybe that could be it also.

My X20 128mb boots up faster than my desktop (2ghz). Not sure why... both w/ fresh install XP Pro. 2.5 min seems slow.

Mine takes about 30 secs bare bones and about 2.5 mins with all my stuff loaded. Timed from the push of the power button to complete boot-up, the start button becomes available even sooner.

update: i replaced the HD with a Samsung MP0402H. It received a very good review from silencpc.com. the new drive much quieter, runs faster and has an 8mb cache as opposed to 2mb. after installing xp onto the new 40gig hd, it now boots up in 30 seconds. very pleased. from the reviews it uses the same amount of power as my old drive so hopefully i dont have a shorter batt life.

I don't think win XP was designed to run on 128MB. It will run but it will be painfully slow. The minimum recommended is 256 MB. My T42 initially came with 256MB and even then using it was quite annoying due to virtual memory.
I am sure once you upgrade RAM boot time will decrease quite a bit.
