Failed BIOS upgrade questions (x41t)

#1 Post by rusting » Fri Apr 24, 2009 1:15 pm

I have a IBM Thinkpad X41 Tablet. I was attempting to flash the BIOS today by using this file: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-59206. I simply ran the exe, which after googling for a solution to the following problem, I've learned is not the correct way to upgrade the BIOS.

The machine rebooted into the update. Once it loaded, it said "Floppy Drive Not Found, Press CTRL-ATL-DEL." so I did and the machine restarted. After it rebooted it gave me an error code which I don't recall saying something like "Keyboard Not Supported". The machine froze so I powered it down to restart and now the screen won't show anything and it doesn't sound as if the machine is booting.

I've rebooted several times, holding the Acess IBM button, F1-12, Del, Prnt Scrn, and anything else I can think of. Only about one out of fifteen times did the thinkpad power on screen show.... but it was frozen.

Any ideas what I should do? Is there a key command to force the bios? Help!

Thanks....

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer to your question but I was about to upgrade my Bios from the Lenovo site. How *should* I be performing a Bios upgrade?!

Well.... don't run the EXE! I can say that for sure. Check out the thinkpad wiki, there's several different ways to flash the BIOS.

I clearly can't tell you which is the best.

Good luck!

Most all, if not every single one, of the software and BIOS updates are downloaded as .EXE files. You should execute them, but the results on how to proceed after that are different. The IBM link that the rusting provided for the X41t BIOS update is one that is meant to be run off of the hard drive (as opposed to creating a boot floppy; the other method to do a BIOS update). If you follow the instructions given, it should update the BIOS correctly. That said, I've never used the non-diskette BIOS update method. I prefer to go with making the boot floppy and not having to deal with running the update from within Windows and having the computer re-boot.

I am the opposite. I have not used the diskette version since the X20. So far had not encountered a single BIOS update failure yet, knock on wood.
