Old New Battery for X40?

#1 Post by WojtekO » Tue May 05, 2009 11:56 pm

I've recently purchased an X40 (still waiting for the package) and though I'd go ahead and buy a new battery for it right away since the one it has was advertised as lasting only about 1.5hours (8cell)

So I started my quest for a new 8-cell battery. eBay gave me chineese sellers, that Denaq from the USA and there it was I though, the perfect auction, which I bought right away.

The item was a genuine brand new 8-cell battery for the X40, for only 45$

Now after I paid and all, I took a closer look and realized I may not have made such a good deal.
A picture in the auction has the lenovo box with a manufacturing date of April 18 2007. That's almost exactly 2 years old.

My question is, is there any chance that battery will perform as if it was a brand new 2009 battery?

I think your IBM/Lenovo battery is still a better bet than the non-oem's even
though it's 2 years old.
From my experience new batteries loose their initial oomph pretty quickly, then
they settle into a couple of years of good battery life, then it's usually down hill
from there.
Since your battery is unused I'd venture a guess that it will settle into the 2
good years of life almost right away, then follow the usual route down hill.

Few months ago I bought used battery (4-cell) for X40 for 50zł (~15$). It was adversed as “1h” operating battery.

After receiving item, I found that this battery is about 4 years old, and has only few cycles, but it full charge capacity was about 10Wh (~27Wh in brand new battery). After reconditioning, battery shows rising full charge capacity, and finally stops on ~26Wh!

So, it is no matter how old is your battery, but how intensively it was used (my was almost unused). To expand battery life, configure your “Battery Maximiser” to keep your batter loaded to ~40% when unused, load it full when really needed. Keep your battery cool, or even remove it from laptop.

Other option is to buy one battery in bad condition and keep it in laptop as UPS, and second battery in good condition, for use only when needed, and normally stored in cool place, ~40% loaded.

Czesz Janko

I'm happy to report that the 2yr old battery behaves like it just rolled out of the factory.
Takes a full charge and works great. I'm happy with the purchase.
