Upgrading X31 HD

#1 Post by LumberJack » Mon Jan 31, 2005 3:39 pm

Hey...

I have the standard 40 gig 4200 rpm hard drive that came with my X31 and I notice that the computer slows down when running programs that access the HD. Oh I also have 768 meg of ram.

How many people have upgraded to say a 7K60 HD and how was it? is it worth the 250 bucks?

Thanks

The performance boost going from a 4200RPM HD to a 7200RPM HD is little short of miraculous!

The 7K60 is only ~$150, sometimes even less!

yes its a great upgrade, and if pay 250 for it your crazy. get it from zipzoomfly like jhem suggested. i got mine in 3 days, and it was an awesome upgrade. they buy a cheap external usb case and use your old 40gig drive as a backup or portable storace

mpcook, I'd really like to get hold on one of your 72000rpm drives!!!

Is there any heat problems running it that fast?

Oops I meant 220.. and I also meant canadian.. from say here:

http://www.canadacomputers.com/storage.html

so it comes out to about 160 but no shipping so I guess its the same as on zoomfly.

Ic... ok well I think I will look into getting an upgrade. I can always get a HD caddy for my ultrabasy and use my existing HD for storage :).

Oh, my next point would be then what's the best way to take my existing drive copy it over directly to the new drive and still have it work? I have not had much success with Ghost in this case!

Thanks

It tends to vibrate so much, I can't hit the right keys on the keyboard. Sounds like a chainsaw too.

yes, it vibrates... lots sometimes... but it doesn't sound like no chainsaw... eventually like a cat, every 2-5 minutes
but when it comes to performance, well it's not that far from desktop hdd's

BTW I was joking about the vibration and noise, the reference was to my "72000rpm" drive.

I am very happy with my 7200rpm 60g drive, although it seems to run hot to me. Under normal use, it stays in the 60's and has gone up to 70 deg F on occasion.

well, I am not, it is happening... and I have the very same hdd like yours. even considering these, I am really happy with the upgrade, the first time I feel a notebook being as fast as a desktop(altho not my desktop, a64 2.6)
now the only thing left is some competition, for our own good(price, perf etc.)

I upgraded my X30's HD to a 60GB 7200RPM HD. The vibration is very noticable at first, especially since the drive is located right under the palm rest.

Over time I've gotten use to the vibrations to an extent that I don't even notice it anymore.

I'd never turn back to 4200RPM again 8)

How has battery life been affected by the new drive? have you noticed a reduction in life due to the new HD?

I haven't noticed any loss in battery performance. When the drive is idle, it's consuming the same amount of power as a 4200rpm idle drive.

I think the battery life is the same or almost the same since I didn't notice no diff whatsoever.
Here you can see it for yourself. Actually it is better than a seagate 5400, not bad...

Just wondering if the faster 60Gb Hitachi *feels* hotter than IBM's standard 40Gb 4200RPM drive? I'm considering an upgrade as well, but just can't stand the heat. The standard drive's heat is about all I can bear!

Oooh. Thanks for the reply. There's no way I'm upgrading then. Better have a slow laptop than one that makes your hands sweat the whole time!

ok.... there are some conflicting posts here...

On the one hand there is a claim that the extra loss in battery time is negligable...

On the other we have guys saying its much hotter and vibrates much more which means that it must be using that much mroe power...

Am I just confused? can someone clear this up?

it does not run much hotter
the extra power the hdd needs is negligable but not non-existent
it vibrates more, lots more sometimes

so... put all these together and what you get? not much and they don't get against each other. I don't know exactly what generates the extra heat but it is there and I guess it has to do with the RPM. if you want to say something else say it so. if your experience is different, say it so. if you still don't believe one can change the mp for a pm come say it again. in the end nobody is endlessly right but one can/may share one's experience/points of view(I let others pick their favorite).

I find the extra heat bothersome, but not so bothersome that I'm willing to spend the $80 or so that it'd take to buy a slower drive and switch back to it.

Oddly enough, I notice a sort of gyroscopic effect that I chalk up to the added rpms. It's subtle, but it's there. And it's not bothersome at all, just "interesting".
