Very long boot time IBM Splash screen

Hello,

I am experiencing Very long boot time, the X31 stays stuck with the IBM Splash screen at least 15 seconds.
I already searched bios parameters and set to quick boot.

i am booting from usb stick, and set boot sequence to "hard drive" which is where the kibgston usb stick appears in the bios.

I cant get rid of the nasty and useless splashscreen delay. When pressing ESC key i get verbosity, after the 15 seconds are elapsed, i can see written "mouse initialized" or something of that nature.

I am not using any mouse, just the onboard thinkpad nipple.

There is no hard disk attached to the computer.

Missing a HDD will cause the system to search for it. Just put the HDD back in and move the USB stick above the HDD in the boot order.

Thanks for your reply. The HDD is dead. I was planning to use it diskless from a usb drive or CF. Is there a way to make it not wait for a disk? (some bioses do). The usb stick itself appears under the menu "hard disk" in the bios.

Any workaround for the delay?

Use a IDE-CF adapter and a CF card in the HDD slot. You will need a relatively fast CF card, above 233x.

I guess the quality of the controller is important. Do you know of any reliable quality supplier on Ebay in Europe or elsewhere?

I am also looking for a replacement battery, i read the forum for hours yesterday. I recall a comment about battery life being incomparatively longer in xp than in linux. is that true? are there ways to maximize battery life under linux and match xp performance?

Actually, the controller (CF adapter) doesn't matter that much.
CF cards are compatible to the ATA standard, so the adapter doesn't have much to do.

On my systems (T23, X32) the batteries last about as long under Linux as they do under Windows.

Installing and using the tool powertop (usually available through your distributions package system) will give you some hints on how to optimize your Linux installation to decrease power consumption.
Not using Compiz and similar progams that use 3D will help as well.

Hello all!

I have reeived the
CF to IDE adapter i ordered.

I have an issue, i was afrait it was not bootable, but entering the setup menu, it is not even seen by the x31 bios.
It is not seen by fdisk either (of course).

Strangely enough, on another dell laptop it is working fine and seen as a 8Gb drive in the bios.

Are there any known issue with some x31 bioses?

How can i upgrade my bios and embedded controller? (i dont have an ultrabase so no cd rom and no diskette)

Plus i don't have windows so i can't run the utility program for upgrade.

The CF card CIS (card information system) can be identified as "Fixed" or "Removable". The card needs to be "Fixed" to boot. Alternatively, you can format it as NTFS first, then redo what you did. NTFS is always identify as "Fixed".

I bought a KINGSTON 8GB elite pro 133x

How do i check the CIS info?

The adapter is a CF to 2"5 DMA and is labelled CF-IDE44/2.0mm ADAPTER V.B1 DMA/Panel LED/4 assemble holes

Buy a second hand USB diskette drive and download the diskette versions of the EC and BIOS updates.

I think Kingston is 'Removable" and RiDATA is "Fixed". Format the Kingston card as NTFS first.
