Now isn't a good time to buy these 1.8" drives, prices have gone up a lot in the last few weeks!
I think many people with X40/41/41Ts for sale are taking out the drives and selling, or at least offering
them, for almost the same price! But they are too high and I think prices will return to normal soon.
But since you need one now you'll have to get one wherever you can.
If you buy from ebay then make sure you search for "X41 hard drive".
There are other 1.8" drives available but avoid them as they are mostly for MP3 players with ZIF connectors.
You need an Hitachi 20G 40G or 60G drive. There are two 60G drives, one regular that needs a caddy
and the other in a metal housing that doesn't. As far as I know these are the the only drives, except
for a very expensive Lenovo SSD, that do not give the 2010 drive error on boot.

The dual voltage (3.3V/5V) Hitachi drives are as following:

HTC4260n0GnAT00 (n=some number)

There are many 1.8 inch ZIF drives from Hitachi, Samsung and Toshiba but will require an IDE-ZIF adapter to work. Here are a few I tested and posted here:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 1&start=30

Since the X40/X41/X41t slots are 3.3V and ZIF drives normally are 3.3V also, the 3.3V regulator on the IDE-ZIF adapter should be bypass (jumpered). Most of these drives were purchased at reasonable prices but yes, Tim is right, prices had increased quite a bit recently.

Here is what I use:

X41t, 60GB Hitachi ZIF HDD (about $40 on eBay) with an adapter
X41, 120GB Samsung ZIF HDD (about $100 on eBay) with an adapter
X40, 32GB CF card (about $75 on Newegg) with an adapter

The RiDATA 233x 32GB CF card remain an attractive solution.

Here is Harry's great "how to" post:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=70458

Here are a few ZIF HDDs:

Hitachi
HTC426040G7CE00 (40GB, 4Krpm, 2MB cache, 7mm thick)
HTC426060G8CE00 (60GB, 4Krpm, 2MB cache, 9.5mm thick)
Samsung
HS040HB (40GB, 4Krpm, 2MB cache, 5mm thick)
HS082HB (80GB, 4Krpm, 8MB cache, 5mm thick)
HS10THB (100GB, 4Krpm, 8MB cache, 8mm thick)
HS122JC (120GB, 5Krpm, 8MB cache, 8mm thick)

The 60GB Hitachi fit in a X41t pretty tightly and the plastic guide rail was removed. The blue rubber bumper was originally from iPod.

The 120GB Samsung went in a X41 and actually needed foam to hold it tight. Guide rail was removed too. The ZIF cable signal quality was not good and caused a 0200 error at boot time but worked fine after booting. A thin piece of foam was placed between the cable and HDD and the error went away.

Here is how it looks thickness wise.
