X41 Tablet randomly crashes, sometimes won't boot

#1 Post by DiGiTY » Mon Jun 22, 2009 12:29 am

I have a X41 tablet (running Windows 7 RC1, build 7100) and all of a sudden it started crashing randomly. It doesn't even blue screen (which means its an error/problem that occurs before Windows can even catch it and report it), it just freezes and I have to hold the power button for 5 seconds to turn it off then back on. Sometimes it doesn't even power on - the caps lock, num lock, power LED flashes but the computer doesn't power on (nothing on screen, no hard drive activity) even though the power LED stays on and the fan is spinning.

I tried removing the battery, hard drive and memory and it still doesn't power on. It does magically power on once in a while and boots Windows [7] but the crash is inevitable and basically puts me back in this frustrating cycle.

The culprit doesn't appear to be Windows 7, the memory, the battery or the hard drive. Any ideas why its crashing so bad? Any idea why I doesn't power on sometimes?

Sounds like there's a problem with the motherboard. I've had T23 systems exhibit the same type of issue and in one case, traced it to a loose crystal. The lockups occurred by simply flexing the system a little bit. Can't say for sure that your X41t has the same type of problem as other things can also be to blame. My advice would be to get a copy of PC Doctor for DOS and see if there's one particular diagnostic that fails. That program can be downloaded from here:

Look under the heading "PC Doctor Diagnostic". You can either use the DOS bootable CD (.ISO image) or the DOS (diskette) version. Of course, this means that you would need a way to burn the CD and boot the system with the disk (USB drive or docking station's Ultrabay) or have a USB floppy drive.
